Purpose & Impact of Position: Provides in-person and/or remote primary care and/or consultation services for patients of SMLC

Qualifications/Requirements: 

• Must practice medicine in accord with the Ethical and Religious Directives for Catholic Health Care Services (link for details)
• 1+ days/month 9:30 a.m. -3:30 p.m. (or flexible hours if telehealth)
• MD, DO, NP, or PA (active license; board certification preferred)
• Ability to use electronic documentation (training available) 

Location(s): On-site clinics (Athens, Crab Orchard, Decatur, Gatlinburg, Rutledge, Washburn) and/or remote for telehealth
# Volunteers in this position at each clinic: 1+ (on-site or remote if telehealth)

Location of Needed Items: Clinic cabinets (recommended to bring your own stethoscope, but other medical supplies are available on the clinic)

Position Details:

• Most important for every position is treating each person with dignity and respect and establishing a compassionate environment by providing emotional, psychological, and spiritual support to patients, friends, and families
• Maintains and ensures patient privacy (especially when working with patients in an area where sensitive information may be overheard) 
• Arrives before beginning of clinic for announcements and group prayer
• Upon arrival at the site obtains needed items and helps set up station
• Completes patient interview, exam, assessment, and treatment plan
• Treats both urgent health needs and chronic conditions for patients of SMLC (as primary care and/or consulting provider) and refers for labs, imaging, and/or specialists as needed (SMLC can connect patients with these services free-of-charge or for a small fee in many cases)
  • Note: Laboratory testing and assistance with obtaining medications are provided on site. Patient education and disease prevention are a strong focus. At this time, SMLC is not able to provide dental care, vision care, narcotics or pain management, pregnancy-related services, screenings for disability, DOT physicals, medication co-pays, or worker’s compensation.
  • Note: Nurses are available to assist with procedures and POC testing, along with answering questions as needed
• Consults and coordinates with health care team members to assess, plan, implement and evaluate patient care plans
• Coordinates with Site Manager and Nurse Manager regarding any concerns, issues, and/or needs throughout clinic day
• At end of shift: 
  • Cleans up station and help reload clinic
  • Records any needed supplies on restocking sheet and/or makes needs list (when necessary) and gives to Nurse Manager or Site Manager 
  • Signs Volunteer Service Hours log and returns badge

All St. Mary’s Legacy Clinic volunteers must complete the Volunteer Application, attend a Volunteer Orientation, and complete the Safe Environment training.
