Purpose & Impact of Position: Provide professional nursing care including completing lab draws and point-of-care tests, assisting provider(s) with procedures, and preparing patient rooms

Qualifications/Requirements: 

• 1+ days/month 9:30 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. 
• RN or LPN (active license)
• Basic computer skills

Location(s): On-site clinics (Athens, Crab Orchard, Decatur, Gatlinburg, Rutledge, Washburn)

Location of Needed Items: In cabinets of clinic (Optional: may be helpful to bring stethoscope, scissors, & watch)

Position Details:

• Most important for every position is treating each person with dignity and respect and establishing a compassionate environment by providing emotional and spiritual support to patients, friends, and families as needed
• Builds rapport with each patient to help him/her feel comfortable coming to the clinic, while also respecting each patient’s time and that the clinic needs to maintain patient flow
• Maintains and ensures patient privacy
• Arrives before beginning of clinic for announcements and group prayer
• Upon arrival at the site:
  • Opens all cabinets and helps unload clinic 
  • Obtains needed items and sets up station (keep lab draw station prepared for patients)
  • Note: Special lab info in cabinet (SMLC does not do PT, PTT, INR)
• Greets and introduces self to the patient (ask DOB to confirm correct chart), and then completes the following (explains to patients as needed) (details for how to document on Athena training page)
  • Maintenance and preparation of exam rooms 
  •  Procedures/tests:
    • BP retakes when elevated
    • Reviewing/clarifying triage info if needed
    • Vaccine administration
    • Urinalysis/dipstick
    • Gyn exam
    • Lab draw
    • EKG (including calibration)
    • Spirometry (including calibration)
    • Dispensing/labeling medications
    • Deploying wheelchair lift when needed
• Assists provider as needed during exam, treatment, and testing
• Maintains accurate, concise and timely documentation 
• Monitors the following for expiration dates: 
  • Urine HCG test strips 
  • Urine dipstick test strips (mark date opened on container for new containers of strips) 
  • Lab tubes 
  • PAP specimen bottles 
  • Vaginal swabs
  • Note: Labcorp completes most of the SMLC specimen/lab orders. The website (link here) includes instructions for most tests completed by SMLC.
• Provides other assistance or support when needed
• Coordinates with Site Manager and Nurse Manager regarding any concerns, issues, and/or needs throughout clinic day
• At end of shift: 
  • Gives all specimens to Nurse Manager or Site Manager to return to Knoxville
  • With other volunteers, cleans station and patient rooms, sweeps floors, stows items, and helps reload clinic
  • Records any needed supplies on restocking sheet and/or makes needs list (when necessary) and gives to Nurse Manager or Site Manager
  • Signs Volunteer Service Hours log and returns badge

All St. Mary’s Legacy Clinic volunteers must complete the Volunteer Application, attend a Volunteer Orientation, and complete the Safe Environment training.
